INTERNATIONAL CAUSE OF DISEASE
World Health Organization (WHO) authorized the publication of the International Classification of Disease which was implemented for mortality coding and classification from death certificates in the U.S. in 1999. The U.S. developed a Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for medical diagnoses based on WHO’s ICD-10 and CMS developed a new Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) for inpatient procedures. ICD-10-CM replaces ICD-9-CM, volumes 1 and 2, and ICD-10-PCS replaces ICD-9-CM, volume 3.
ICD stands for the International Classification of Disease. The ICD provides a method of classifying diseases, injuries, and causes of death. The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes the ICDs to standardize the methods of recording and tracking instances of diagnosed disease all over the world, making it possible to conduct research on diseases, their causes, and their treatments.The ICD is important because it provides a common language for reporting and monitoring diseases. This allows the world to compare and share data in a consistent and standard way – between hospitals, regions and countries and over periods of time.
ICD-10 was first published by the World Health Organization in 1992. This version, which is what ICD-10-CM is based on, was adopted by the United States in 1999 for cause of death (death certificates) only. In October 2015, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the Federal agency responsible for the use of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, released the clinical modification (CM) of the classification for morbidity purposes. The United States is the only country using ICD-10-CM. In addition, ICD-10-PCS was released, which is for procedures (replacement for ICD-9-CM, volume 3, Procedures).
